Lead Testing Hurts Local Artisans and Toymakers
This new “lead paint testing for all childrens’ products” law is nonsensical when it comes to handmade items. The faults of overseas toymaking companies and their lack of restrictions and regulations have ruined things for local artisans and toymakers. According to the new law, everything must be tested for lead according to the testing standards now set in place with the CPSIA. It’s really making things difficult for the artists who create fantastic, lovely toys with their own wonderful hands. This law would require each toy they make to be tested, just as if they were items created by a giant corporation. The tests are expensive and ridiculous to expect out of a small business owner. In today’s world economy one would think government organizations would want to save small businesses, but it seems they have overlooked this vital part of our business world. Handmade items are a huge income for so many artists and creative entrepeneurs. Take a moment to read over this new law and the standards, then hop on over to here and sign the petition!
It seems lead paint is popping up in everything these days. It’s sad, really. Everything from cell phone cases to jewelry to clothing has lead paint in it. Darn. I really like my LG Dare’s protective cas, but it says “Made in China.” It was a bargain; it was only $9.99 (+ shipping.) Hmm. Oh well. I’ll just avoid chewing on my mobile until I hear anything further. It tasted bad anyway.

Transportation Woes
Here’s to hoping this new etsy shop works out for me. I could really use the extra cash as my lovely little car, Guadalupe, has decided she’ll bless me with some new… “idiosyncracies” as Karyn put it so politely. The emergency brake light is always on, which is frustrating because the emergency brake is almost never used. The gas gauge is a floating gauge and turns the “gas light” on when you park on a hill, causing you to think there’s no gas in the car and panic. There’s a mysterious whistling noise that’s been undiscoverable since the month after I bought the car. Ohhh the grand joys of owning a used car!
New Prospects, New Projects
I received a message from a user on Etsy requesting a custom listing for some jewelry. Elyse had requested a custom necklace/earrings set themed with Marvel’s Thor, so I created a listing to hold her item. I logged onto my Mac and checked Apple Mail and lo and behold (THERE’S ALWAYS A LO AND BEHOLD) there was a message with another user requesting their own Thor Jewelry listing. My potential customer is looking for a necklace, earrings, and bracelet set. I’m absolutely ecstatic to think that I’ve really hit something here with my new style jewelry.
I worked on two new necklaces today: one batman and one hello kitty.
Batman can be seen here:
